Tony Bones

Tony Bones:
I ate at the Meridian Room last night for dinner. It was awesome I had smoked salmon with capers and a Guiness steak and cheese sandwich with au jus sauce. and a horseradish mayo. Damn it was good. Then when I visited the bathroom after my meal I was pleasantly surprised to find two Tony Bones pieces in the men's bathroom. He has been one of my favorite local artists for years now. I own several of his paintings that hang in my home. Spectacular. Also, here is a pick of my home studio right now. I know it's a little blurry but it's taking shape. I've got a 4-track recorder coming in the mail so expect so me new and interesting music to come out of Barker Ranch in the next year. Merry Christmas and have a safe and Happy New Year.

Bride of Frankenstein

Bride of Frankenstein:
So, Yesterday I got my Frankenstein edition of the Universal Monster box set series in the mail. I immediately I opened it up and put on Bride of. Which, in my opinion is one of the best horror movies ever made (besides Psycho). It has everything: frights, laughs and heart wrenching love scenes. Too fucking amazing man. And the Bride of the monster is amazing and beautifully weird. Plus, when she rejects the monster he says "She hates me." and I think every man has had this moment with a woman. Too sad. I love it. Watch it! Watch it! Plus you get to see the monster smoking cigars and drinking booze and that is funny.
I hope this message finds you well.
Love your friend,

Nostalgia: This photo of the cigarette machine gives me nostalgic feelings. Makes me think of things long gone. Like phone booths and eight track cassettes. Makes me think of old cars and jukeboxes . I wonder aloud where these things have disappeared too. Junk yards, land fills recycling plants. When will we realize memories and these things that build memories just can't be discarded or forgotten about? I play music that makes me feel the same way. This ukulele that I play almost everyday gives me hope that things lost are not forgotten and things forgotten are not lost. In a world of uncertainty I know that this ukulele and this cigarette machine can take me to these place of times past. They quite essentially are time machines. I want to love, laugh and live so hard that I mark the world with my spirit. I hope that you understand. I will never forget you. You are my friends and my lovers.

The Howling Wolf

The howling wolf knows my name
Calls it in the dead of night
He chases me through the darkness,
until I suckle it's kin again.
I've never let fear stop me
I still shiver during those cold black nights
When I hear the howling wolf call my name
When I hear the howling wolf call my name
call my name.

I have the biggest crush on this lady from the American apparel ad. Geez. They call her Rachel in NYC. If anyone knows this lady please have her contact me. I'm serious. It never hurts to ask. She so damned dreamy. For sure. I hope this note finds you all well. Please vote for my forth coming ep title.

The Road:

I've Been waiting for this movie to come out for 2 years now. One of my most favorite books ever by Cormac McCarthy, who is my favorite author and the most important living writer of our time ... or maybe ever. The release date has been pushed back 4 or 5 times. But, Now it comes out next week the day before Thanksgiving. I know what I'm doing on Thanksgiving. I hope you guys will go and see it. It's going to be extraordinary.

Boy Howdy: Oh Man was that fire great last night! First fire in my fireplace. Just wish I had someone to enjoy it with. Also, this weekend I was reading this Sartre book that I bought somewhere. And I found this rad Olan Mills photo of some family in side this book. There was weird writing on the back. Hebrew, Russian? Not sure. But, anyways I made this post card and guess who it's going to? Yep. My buddy Thomas Schaefer. First of all cause he's my art buddy, but second he's been doing all this work on this blog so, I feel he deserves a little something for all his hard work. The lady on this postcard has been on dozens of postcards that I have sent out. Tom says he really likes when he gets another one of her in the mail. So, here ya go buddy. Thank you.

Aaron Barker:
This is a very accurate portrait of me: Alone navigating through the treacherous paths of the world/my life/Love. It's kinda sad, but that is life ... huh? The Buddha said that Life is suffering. Once we understand that we can enjoy the journey. Me ... I'm just a man, a lonely man, who has gotten lost within these lines. The lines of history, the lines of life and the lines of Love. Tread lightly, my friends, As George Toomer would say "throw your stones and be surprised where they land, but as you jump from stone to stone always land safely."
With all my love and friendship ...

Fall Photos: Since Autumn arrived today (brrrr is it cold) I thought I'd post these photos I took around my office in the last few weeks. I hope you enjoy them. Tonight I'm going to the grocery store, gathering some fire wood and settling in front of the fireplace with a blanket, My Domo and a new episode of How I Met Your Mother. Leave me a comment or call me. I miss you.
A. Barker
P.S. Stay tuned cause this blog is getting revamped in the next few weeks and I have a lot of new content that I will be publishing.

Friday 13th Elm Street Tattoo:
Yep I got my obligatory 13th Tattoo on Friday. I lucked out this year they had a larger flash set to choose from and then Oliver Peck himself did the tattoo. WOOT! Plus, I got to see this basset hound asleep in one of the display cases. Over-all a damn good friday.

Buffalo George Toomer:
Here is a drawing that George Toomer's son George Jr. gave me a few weeks ago. This is really weird for me. I've seen a few drawings that George drew of me. But, I never saw this one. I don't know when he drew it. I miss George terribly. He was one of my really good friends. Thanks buddy. I've been thinking about you too.

P.S. I've never dressed like that or have I had an ear ring. FYI. Click on image to get a closer look.

Thursday, November 05, 2009

FYI. Just heard I have a midnight show on Wednesday Nov. 18 at Andy's Bar in Denton. It's a variety show with a bunch of different acts. The cover is $1. I know that's far and away and on a week night but any support would be greatly appreciated. I spent many a night getting drunk in the basement of Andy's Bar while I was in college and living in Denton. I can't wait to go back and play a gig there. Plus there is paperback plus just across the street, which is one of the best used book stores in the state and you know I'll be hitting that up too while I'm there. I hope to see you there.

Don't know if all of ya'll know that I have been making mail art for about 12 or 13 years now. And within that time I have probably mailed some where near 1,000 pieces of hand made art to friends and family around the country and world. These images are of some postcards I made last week. Limited edition set of four. They are going to and in no particular order: Thomas Schaefer (ATL, Georgia), Christopher Palazzo (Brooklyn, New York), Jenny Garcia (Austin, TX.) and one is going to my Uncle Eugene who is in the State Reformatory in Granite, Oklahoma. All his prison buddies dig it when he gets my postcards on the back of six-pack cartons. And by the way I used all Texas beers for this series except for the Mexican Pacifico, but hell Mexico is Texas. So that counts, right? My work Buddy Greg Evans gave me this image of a womans torso in a hounds-tooth skirt and heels. I fucking love it. Such a sexy image for sure. Thanks Greg. I hope this dispatch finds you well.

Werewolf of London (1935)

Werewolf of London (1935): "Thanks for the bullet..."
This is one of the great werewolf movies of all time. It's campy and scary. The make-up is minimal on the wolfman to allow for a broader range of expressions. And it's hilarious when the werewolf puts on his hat and coat to prowl under the full moon and kill. Plus, we don't get all the silver bullet b.s. that we get in the later movies. I really enjoyed this film. I have it on my Universal Wolfman box set and just got around to watching it. Awesome film. Makes the Howling look like shit. Starring Henry Hull and the beautiful Valerie Hobson. Wish I could find me a looker like that.

Brief Encounter

Brief Encounter: (*Spoiler)What an amazing film so beautiful so weird so true . This movie is so well done I'm surprised I've never seen it before. And with Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard whom was in The Third Man, Mutiny On the Bounty and Superman, among many others. Weird weird weird love. And then the suicide attempt but then it's just "all a dream" anyway. Too fucking cool. Too beautiful. I loved it loved it loved it.
I hope you do to.

This a shitty video I self-shot on my camera. The sound sucks and the video is dark, but I hope you enjoy it none-the-less. The name of the song is My Heart Wouldn't Start Your Car. You guys are my friends and I don't mind sharing this stuff with you. You make me all warm in side like when I'm drunk or I'm playing guitar and singing. Don't be shy you can leave constructive criticism. I eat that shit up. I'll be doing more of this stuff in the future. FYI just with better quality sound and images and stuff. And like I said to a friend simple songs from a simple man.
With all my love,
Aaron Barker
P.S. I miss you call me sometime.

Townes Van Zandt & Chicken:
This is my favorite photo of Townes and of course it's with a chicken. Gives me an idea. Who has a chicken? Get in touch with me. Can I rent it by the hour. Remember that scene from John Water's Pink Flamingos where that guy and that gal are having relations with a chicken between them? That was a great moment in celluloid history. For sure.

I'm expressing my love of chickens today. I want a pet chicken. That would be awesome.

Women & Chicken:
Nothin' better than women and fried chicken. Now I know why both Southern Culture On the Skids and Scott Biram sing about CHICKEN. She got an 8 piece box.

Public Service Announcement:
I usually don't publish God awful images on my blog, but today I have to make an exception. I have seen these ugly ass strappy shoes being worn by all kinds of women (young, old, fat, skinny, ugly and pretty) and this has to stop. They look like fucking grandma shoes. Don't wear them. Especially if you have big-ass ugly toes that you paint and then neglect and have paint chipping off with your toes hanging off the front. Ugghh! Can't stand it. Hide then big ole' dogs Please! And another thing buy shoes that fit. If your toes are hanging half way off the front of the shoe then: THEY DON'T FIT! Pass this on to someone it may help. This has been a public service announcement from: Aaron Barker

"Sex-stained Cheetos and the collapse of Deviant the mind"
I think that is gonna be the name of my next book. Or it could be:
"The Devil's Play Thang"
I don't even know what I'm talking about. This book is a figment of my imagination.
I'm listening to Vivian Girls today. They rock. FYI.
M. Ward:
Friend of mine gave me a bunch of new albums (Thanks Eric & Lisa) One of them was this M. Ward's Hold Time. I really like it. Singer/songwriter kinda stuff with a alt-country/modern feel. Really good shit. I would recommend this album to anyone who likes really good music. I've know that M. Ward was in She & Him with Zooey Deschanel. I'll have to check that out now. Zooey makes a cameo on this album and so does Lucinda Williams. Excellent stuff!
Fuck your hang-ups and get over yourself. Listen to good music. Don't be a-feared.
With Love,
Aaron K. Barker

Check out the Dinosaur Jr. cover of that song. It's killer. It's been so hot. This photo literally looks just like heaven. I can't wait. It's been a busy and boring week so far. Tomorrow, I'll post a show and ep review of RTB2. Stay tuned....

Dash Snow:
Oh fuck one more. Brilliant!
More Dash Snow:
This guy is my hero. His work is awesome. Reminds me of Larry Clark, Nan Goldin and Terry Richardson crossed with Ray Johnson. How fucking cool!
